How much does a teacher in NZ earn?
All teachers teaching in State schools in New Zealand, are paid by the Ministry of Education. They set the payscale based on your qualifications and experience.
What do I need to do, to be able to teach in NZ?
For some, there is a considerable commitment and cost involved in getting registered to teach in NZ so you would need to get onto this quickly. Some initial information is as follows:
1. Getting Registered: please note that, while there is no cost to you for working with Oasis, there are fixed costs involved in getting registered to teach in NZ. Concerning qualification assessment and professional registration all people who teach in New Zealand need to have a New Zealand practising certificate and the most important first step is to commence application to the NZQA to have your qualifications assessed relative to the NZ teaching standard and then to get the application for NZ teachers registration lodged.
- For the NZ Qualification Authority: _www.nzqa.govt.nz_
Standard application (approx) $750 NZ unless you have a ‘pre-approved’ qualification.
Refer to this link to check: http://www.nzqa.govt.nz/qualifications-standards/international-qualifications/international-qualifications-assessment/teaching-iqa-exemptions/#heading2-1
-For Teacher Registration: www.educationcouncil.org.nz_ approx cost $300 NZD
2. Getting a work visa: for those teachers 30 years and under (from countries which are participants) the option of a *working holiday visa* allows you to work for 12 months so if you arrive in NZ with a work visa and provisional NZ teacher registration we would be happy to meet you to discuss employment options. If you are over 30, application for residency via the *Skilled Migrant Category* (a permanent post is an essential condition) is very achievable especially if you have the subjects and experience NZ schools are looking for. http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/workperm.htm
*Work visas* for shorter term contracts are much harder to obtain as teaching has been withdrawn from the Immigration NZ priority skills shortage list. If a school wants to appoint an overseas trained teacher they will usually need to be able to prove that there are no local teachers (i.e. with registration and work eligibility) that can perform that role. Unfortunately this is making securing a contract post without a work visa very difficult indeed.
*3. The next step: If you can forward a CV Photos and brief cover letters that will be much appreciated. The information we need covers your personal situation ie single, married, dependents etc, the type of job you would like, potential arrival dates etc.
Do I need a visa?
If you are not the holder of a New Zealand or Australian passport, then yes, you will need a work visa. We can talk to you about the most suitable visa you may be eligible for.

Testimonials
Ngā Tohu
Beginning in England with advice about registering as a teacher and what teaching in New Zealand is really like; to my arrival, suggesting areas to live and finding me relief teaching (You really can be on the beach by 4pm!), Oasis have been with me every step of the way and made the move as stress-free as it could be. Finally, helping me secure a permanent job in a fantastic school and proving to me that I really have made the best decision. I couldn’t be happier teaching here in Auckland!
“Sheryll and the team at Oasis Education were fantastic at every stage of the process of finding a teaching position in Auckland. Right from the start, I was given superb advice on a range of subjects – how much I could expect to earn, what living costs would be like and even areas to consider living. Communication was very easy and I felt completely at ease due to the personal service that Oasis offer. The team at Oasis regularly go above and beyond to help their clients; they kindly spoke to the Education council on my behalf when it was difficult to contact them from England and even popped in to visit me for a coffee at work after I had arrived!”
“In July 2018 I decide that I would like a new challenge and to teach in New Zealand. With 14 years teaching experience in geography and business studies I thought that the process would be relatively easy to secure a new teaching position. I applied for 12 potential roles and was not shortlisted for anyone of the positions. I contacted a few schools to gain some feedback on my applications to try and understand why I was struggling to be shortlisted. There responses were the same across the board: All teachers applying to new roles need to gain teacher registration status first and you should also gain the assistance of an educational recruiter. An old work colleague of mine, who had moved to NZ two years earlier, highly recommended Martin Strang from Oasis Education. I cannot sing Martin’s praises enough. His expert knowledge of the application process and his connections within the Auckland area opened the doors to a number of opportunities. Within a month I had secured a new role as the Head of Tourism. His support and guidance did not end there as a number of hurdles still had to be overcome such as visa applications. Martin has always been on hand to answer any questions that arose at anytime. I cannot recommend Oasis Education enough in particular Martin Strang. Six weeks into our move to New Zealand and the entire family is loving the new experience and we are so happy we decided to take the plunge!!”
“I cannot recommend Oasis highly enough for their professionalism, commitment to and care for those of us who are part of the teaching team.”
“I have been with Oasis now for a number of years. They have found me work as a daily relief teacher, consistently from day one. Through them I get to experience a variety of schools and work with children of many different year levels. Oasis expertly manage, at short notice to successfully balance the needs of their schools with the right teacher for the job.”
“My first encounter with Oasis Education was at an Emigrate show in London in 2005. Since meeting an Oasis representative, I received endless support in finding suitable teaching positions as well as help and hints in completing all the paperwork needed to secure a work and residency in NZ. Oasis, for me, bridged the 12,000 mile gap between UK and NZ enabling me to make informed decisions about, not only the schooling system but the communities and people of NZ. Since arriving in the country in January 2006, I have continued to be in contact with Oasis and would recommend them to teachers considering the same move or NZ principals looking to hire new staff.”
“Oasis takes the anxiety out of finding relievers for day to day school needs with regards to the quality and reliability of their teacher recruitment options.”
“We have been with them for a long time and are extremely happy with the service they provide. Helpful, quick and always to our satisfaction.”
“Moving to a new country and finding a new job is an exciting and daunting experience. I feel so fortunate to have had the support of Oasis Education. They have been there every step of the way sharing their expert knowledge, practical advice and positive encouragement. Thank you so much Oasis Education – with your amazing support, I now have everything in place to start my new teaching job in New Zealand!”
The process of signing up was so smooth- in the space of three days, I had emailed my interest, met with the team and began my first day of relief teaching!
The Oasis team are so helpful and very quick to reply when you have a query. They are very understanding of your needs whether that may be that you only have access to public transport or that you are only available to work certain days- they make it work for you!
I have been in Auckland 3 months now and I have had relief teaching work every day so there’s no shortage of jobs!
Every teacher thinking of moving to NZ and is looking for relief work should sign up with Oasis!
